The Special Assistant on Works to Irele local government council chairman, Kayode Ebisanmi, has commended the swift reaction of the Rep. Jimi Odimayo on the 14 years of blackout in the Southern district of Ondo state.
This followed the adoption of a motion by the lawmaker representing Irele/Okitipupa Federal Constituency at the Green Chamber, Rep. Odimayo Jimi at plenary on Wednesday.
Presenting the motion, Jimi alleged that communities in Irele Local Government Areas (LGAs) such as Ode¬lrele, OdeAjaja, Akotogbo, lyesa, Ujusun, Ormi, Aturase, and Udogun had been without electricity supply for 14 years.
He said that other communities affected included lgbotako, llutitun, lkoya, Ayeka, lgbodigu, lrinje, lgundan, ldobilayo and big road area of Okitipupa, and most communities in Ese¬Edo and llaje LGA.
He added that the situation had brought untold hardship to residents of the area as all Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) had folded up.
This, he said, was due to lack of electricity couple with the high cost of providing alternative power supply using generating sets.
Adopting the motion, the House mandated the Committee on Power to summon the General Manager/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the BEDC to provide an explanation for the problem.
The House also summoned the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to explain why Irele, Okitipupa, Ese Odo and Ilaje LGA were disconnected from the national grid.
The House also directed that communities disconnected should be reconnected, while the committee should liaise with the National Electricity Regulatory Commission on the quick reconnection of the affected LGA.
The House urged the committe to report back in eight weeks for further legislative action.
Kayode Ebisanmi has praised this legislative intervention and urged other stakeholders to compliment the effort of the lawmaker. He also noted that the Irele Council Chairman, Ajimatokin, had also made several efforts to resolve the blackout issue in the area.
According to Kayode, “We can’t praise Rep. Jimi Odimayo enough. Within a very short period, he has proven to our people that he has us at heart. This gesture will forever be appreciated by us.
“Let me also commend the consistent effort of my boss, Ajimatokin who has also been on this blackout issue for a very long time. I urge other stakeholders to compliment these efforts. ” he concluded.
