In a bid to strengthen collaboration between government and civil society, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Volunteer Service and State Coordinator of the Nigerian National Volunteer Service (NNVS) in Ondo State, Hon. Adeolu Iwakun, on Monday held a strategic meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the state.
The engagement, which took place at the Cocoa Conference Hall of the Governor’s Office in Akure, brought together CSO leaders and volunteer desk officers to address key operational challenges and chart a new course for effective partnership in governance.
Hon. Iwakun acknowledged the crucial role of CSOs in driving social development and reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s administration to promoting volunteerism and inclusive governance.
“Our goal is to create a more structured, supportive environment for civil society to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the development of Ondo State,” Iwakun said. “His Excellency is intentional about engaging citizens, and this meeting is a clear demonstration of that commitment.”
During the session, the CSOs raised issues around policy gaps, delays in registration processes with government agencies, and the need for easier access to official data. They also expressed willingness to play a more active role in policy formulation, budgeting processes, and development planning.
The SSA assured them of continuous engagement through capacity-building seminars, conferences, and strategic forums aimed at enhancing their operational effectiveness. He also pledged to relay their concerns to the appropriate authorities and advocate for timely reforms.
Also speaking at the meeting, Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Mobilisation, Hon. Olakunle Paul Adeniyi, urged CSOs to maintain open communication and foster a results-oriented relationship with government stakeholders.
In a unanimous resolution, the CSOs pledged their support for Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration and lauded the appointment of a dedicated SSA on Volunteer Service, describing the move as timely and unprecedented.
They reiterated their commitment to complementing government efforts across various sectors and working collaboratively to advance development in Ondo State.
The meeting marks a significant step toward institutionalising government-CSO partnerships and deepening the culture of civic engagement in the state.
