In a compelling demonstration of unity and civic resolve, the youths of Ogbagi Akoko, alongside community stakeholders, staged a mass protest today to decry the deteriorating state of roads in their town. The action follows a series of tragic incidents, including loss of lives, directly linked to the dangerous and neglected road conditions.
Three months ago, the community’s pain and concerns were brought to global attention through a BBC Yoruba report, which detailed the devastating consequences of the crumbling infrastructure. Yet, despite this public outcry, there has been no meaningful response or action from the authorities. Frustrated and heartbroken, the people of Ogbagi Akoko are now taking matters into their own hands.
During the protest, community leaders issued an urgent call for intervention. They implored Senator Pastor Jide Ipinsagba and Hon. Ife Ehindero, the area’s representative in the House of Representatives, to champion the cause of the Ogbagi people at both the state and federal levels. The protestors also appealed to the Ondo State Government to engage federal agencies and prioritize the reconstruction and ongoing maintenance of these critical roadways.
Hon. Afe Felix, representing Akoko Northwest Constituency II, was named as a pivotal point of contact. Protest leaders emphasized the importance of his role in amplifying their voices and ensuring that their grievances are no longer ignored.
The message from Ogbagi Akoko is clear and resolute: “Revive Our Roads, Save Our Lives.” The community is unified in its demand for safe, motorable roads and is determined to keep pushing until these demands are met.
As one protester declared, “The lives of Ogbagi people matter. We will not stay silent while our loved ones die on roads that should be safe.”
