The Akoko North West Students Union Government proudly reaffirms its steadfast support for the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in response to the recent petition regarding the NYSC saga. We stand resolutely by the Minister, whose exemplary leadership, both as a Member of the House of Representatives and as Minister of Interior, has significantly contributed to the progress of our great nation, Nigeria.
Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has consistently demonstrated transformative leadership, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political landscape. As the Member representing Akoko North East/North West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives from 2019 to 2023, he championed numerous initiatives that uplifted his constituents and the nation at large. His legislative prowess was evident in his sponsorship of impactful bills and motions aimed at improving infrastructure, education, and youth empowerment. Notably, he facilitated the construction and rehabilitation of schools, health centers, and roads in his constituency, enhancing access to quality education and healthcare. His commitment to youth development was exemplified through scholarship programs, vocational training, and empowerment initiatives that provided opportunities for countless young Nigerians.
As Chairman of the House Committee on NDDC (Niger Delta Development Commission), Dr. Tunji-Ojo played a pivotal role in ensuring accountability and efficiency in the commission’s operations. He advocated for sustainable development projects in the Niger Delta, fostering economic growth and environmental restoration. His efforts in securing funding for critical infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and electrification projects, brought tangible benefits to communities, earning him widespread acclaim.
Since assuming office as Minister of Interior in President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Dr. Tunji-Ojo has continued to shine as a beacon of excellence. His remarkable achievements at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) include clearing a backlog of 204,332 passports in just three weeks, averting a national crisis. He has revolutionized passport processing with a two-week timeline and introduced home and office passport delivery starting in February 2024. The innovative option for applicants to upload passport photographs has streamlined the process, enhancing accessibility for all Nigerians.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo’s bold stance on international relations, advocating for reciprocity in visa processes, reflects his commitment to fairness for Nigerian citizens. His efforts to improve the welfare of paramilitary officers, including plans for a functional pension board and salary alignment with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), have significantly boosted morale and productivity.
In a compassionate approach to criminal justice reform, the Minister facilitated the clearance of fines and compensations worth N585 million, enabling the release of 4,068 inmates and decongesting correctional facilities. His vision to transform correctional centers into hubs of rehabilitation marks a progressive shift towards holistic reintegration, fostering hope and redemption.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Dr. Tunji-Ojo was honored as the “Public Service Person of the Year 2023” by Leadership newspaper for his bold reforms, particularly in resolving the passport issuance crisis within weeks of assuming office. His proactive engagement with agencies and international partners to combat illegal migration and organized crime further underscores his dedication to a safer Nigeria.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo’s tenure as both a legislator and Minister of Interior stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment to transformative leadership. His achievements in the House of Representatives laid a strong foundation for his current role, where he continues to elevate the Ministry of Interior to new heights.
We, the Akoko North West Students Union Government, dismiss the recent petition as baseless and reaffirm our confidence in Dr. Tunji-Ojo’s ability to deliver impactful reforms. We call on all Nigerians to recognize and support his remarkable contributions to our nation’s progress.
