A youth-based political support group in Akure, Ondo State, has condemned the vandalism of its campaign billboards promoting the re-election of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the act as criminal and undemocratic.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Akure Youth for BTO group said several of its billboards were destroyed at key locations within the Akure metropolis, including St Peter’s Unity, Road Block, and Airport Junction. The group alleged that the incident was carried out by suspected political opponents seeking to suppress their lawful political expression.
The group further claimed that surveillance footage had identified those responsible for the vandalism, adding that evidence had been securely obtained. Despite this, it said it would refrain from immediate legal action in the interest of maintaining peace and promoting democratic values.
According to the statement, efforts are already underway to repair and replace the damaged billboards to ensure continued visibility of their campaign message.
However, the group issued a stern warning that any further acts of vandalism would result in decisive legal action, including the release of evidence to security agencies and the public.
The group also called on relevant security agencies to enhance surveillance and safeguard political materials, stressing the importance of protecting citizens’ rights in a democratic society.
It reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful, issue-based campaign and reiterated its support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
