Tension is mounting within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akure, Ondo State, following allegations that duly elected local government executives have been sidelined, sparking condemnation from a youth group within the party.
Akure Youths for BTO have strongly criticized the APC State Chairman, Kolawole Babatunde, and the Akure South Local Government Chairman, Gbenga Fasua, accusing them of removing the names of legitimately elected party executives and preventing their swearing-in.
The controversy stems from an affirmed list of executives reportedly elected on February 21, 2026, at Aquinas College, Akure. The list includes key positions such as Chairman (Grenga Jemiluyi), Deputy Chairman (Oniya Aderemi), Secretary (Ogedengbe Sunday), and other principal officers across finance, organization, welfare, youth leadership, and advisory roles.
According to the youths, the alleged action—said to have been carried out under the instruction of the state governor—represents “petty politics” and reflects bitterness toward party members believed to be aligned with the interior minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
They argued that sidelining the elected executives undermines internal democracy within the APC and creates division within the party structure. The group further warned that such developments portray certain leaders as working against party unity rather than strengthening it.
“We call on the leadership of the party to respect the mandate of the duly elected executives and halt all divisive actions capable of destabilizing the party,” the statement read.
The situation has raised concerns among party faithful in Akure South, with observers warning that unresolved internal disputes could affect cohesion ahead of future political engagements.
