Stakeholders in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, have moved to address growing security concerns in the community, adopting fresh measures aimed at improving safety for residents and students.
The resolutions were reached at a town hall meeting on security and safety convened by the Coalition of Nigerian Youth on Security and Safety Affairs (CONYSSA), Akoko South West Chapter, on Friday at the Adetutu Civil Centre.
The meeting drew participation from security agencies, youth groups, student bodies, and traditional leaders, including representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Nigeria Forest Security Service, and the Police Community Relations Committee, as well as officials of the Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA).
Speaking at the meeting, a representative of the Divisional Police Officer stressed that security remains a collective responsibility, urging stronger collaboration and trust between residents and law enforcement agencies.
Discussions at the forum identified poor tenant documentation, unregulated commercial transport activities, and the proliferation of abandoned buildings as major drivers of insecurity in the area. Participants expressed concern that many landlords and agents fail to keep proper records of tenants, creating opportunities for criminal elements to operate undetected.
The activities of the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria also came under scrutiny, with stakeholders linking the lack of proper identification for riders to cases of theft and hijacking.
To address the challenges, the meeting resolved that landlord associations would be established across the community under the supervision of traditional authorities to strengthen local security monitoring. It was also agreed that a standardized identification system would be introduced for commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators to improve accountability.
In addition, landlords and estate agents were directed to adopt uniform tenancy agreements and maintain up-to-date tenant records, while security agencies were urged to begin profiling occupants of abandoned buildings and enforce compliance with tenancy regulations.
Participants called on residents, landlords, transport operators, and security agencies to support the implementation of the measures, emphasizing that collective action is essential to restoring safety in the community.

The Coalition of Nigerian Youth on Security and Safety Affairs (CONYSSA), Akoko South West Chapter, successfully convened a Town Hall Meeting on Security and Safety on Friday, 1st May 2026, at the Adetutu Civil Centre, Akungba-Akoko.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders and representatives from various organizations, including:

2. Transport Union Activities:
Concerns over the unregulated operations of the Akungba Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle, Tricycle, Repairers and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACCOMORAN), particularly the absence of proper identification systems, contributing to incidents such as hijacking.
3. Abandoned Properties:
The security risks posed by neglected buildings, often occupied by unverified individuals, including itinerant scavengers.
4. Regulation of Agency Practice:
The urgent need for a standardized tenancy framework and proper coordination among agents, landlords, and student tenants.
*OBSERVATIONS*
The meeting observed that:
Inadequate tenant documentation by landlords creates opportunities for criminal activities.
The absence of proper identification among commercial riders is linked to increasing cases of hijacking and theft.
Abandoned buildings occupied by unprofiled individuals pose significant security threats to the community.
*RESOLUTIONS*
The meeting resolved as follows:
1. The traditional institution of Akungba-Akoko, through the Alale-in-Council, shall mandate all Quarter Chiefs to establish functional Landlord Associations responsible for monitoring security within their areas.
2. The Akungba Youth Forum, in collaboration with CONYSSA and the Nigeria Police Force, shall develop and enforce a standardized identification system for commercial riders. This will include the use of numbered aprons/bibs and compulsory display of plate numbers to curb criminal activities.
3. Landlords and agents shall adopt a uniform tenancy agreement template and maintain updated tenant registers, which must be made available to security agencies upon request.
4. Relevant security agencies shall commence profiling of occupants in abandoned buildings and strictly enforce tenancy regulations across the community.
